The Insert File operation just creates something of a shortcut to the file
on your machine.
Once a model has any size, complexity, or multi-user context it is always
made up of multiple files. Packages are separated into their own files,
etc. So, given the premise that a model is not one monolithic file but is
instead a linked family of files, it makes fine sense that Rose links
external files to the model rather than making a physical copy of the files
within the model.
One issue is that separate files causes an issue that someone else's machine
might have the files in different locations than they are on my machine.
This issue exists for the separated out packages as well as other attached
files. This is solved by making sure you have a path map variable set to
some directory at or above the level of the location of the files before
attaching them.
This leaves two minor maintenance points. One often creates a readme file
to go with the model that describes both the relevant path maps that have to
be setup as well as the closure of the model to assist in packaging it up
and delivering it to someone. This is probably automate-able, but I have
never written the script to do it.
I for one am happy that Rose does not make a one-time, by-value copy of
supplementary documentation when I attach it to my model.

the Rose help-file says that files can be added (ar attached) by the "Insert
File"-command. But Rose only puts links to the file into the model.
Isn't it possible to store files in the Rose-repository? Which sense does
linking to files in the local file-system make?
