Hello Cindy,

By selling UML CASE Tools for a couple of years
I've seen a lot of companies introducing OO and CASE.
Now after 8 years of OOAD / CASE experience I try
to help customers to improve their development processes
by introducing methods, OO, CASE etc.
As sw developers often still have unrealistic expectations
on what UML and CASE means for SW-Development I enjoy
supporting CASE-customers instead of simply selling UML Tools.

You mention two interesting topics in your mail

1) Quality Bounds

2) Support

First I must say that I like the words : "Quality bounds"
in this context.
I think Rational customers have two problems related
to your topics :

1) Quality bounds.

Example :
I've been wondering who tested the Rose 2001-ClearCase integration.
In Rose 2001 the "File / Save" ! button is ! disabled ! as soon
as the Rose-ClearCase integration is set up. ( You can't save
the model unless you checkout the root controlled unit )
As the "File / Save" button seems to be pretty important
to me, I suppose Rational has pretty wide quality bounds.....
( Defect rose00019248 )

I won't mention all the other quality topics here, but I don't
see any evidence why Rational has "Software Engineering Leadership"
Unfortunately Rational has "Tool selling leadership", but I think
that's something different.

2) Support

Rose may be OK for small projects. If customers have
real big projects, rational-germany employees do NOT want to
get "involved" in the customers problems.
As soon as questions arise about Rose Scalability,
multi-user support etc, Rational Germany is simply not
able to understand and solve customer topics

Together )

I'm pretty sure that Together has better Support AND
Features for Java Development.
I've been talking to TISCON and Togethersoft employees
in the last couple of months. Even if they have a hard time
their solutions are still more valuable than the answers
I get from Rational. So Together is good for design and
Java-implementation work.

Select )

I'm convinced that Select Enterprise 6.x is much more
stable and scalable. Select Enterprise
http://www.princetonsoftech.com/products/enterprise.asp
can handle huge projects with multiple analysts/designers
working WITHOUT modeling data losses.
So Select is good platform for large teams doing OOAD
in real ( large ) projects.
For Real Time environments see http://www.artisansw.com
based on the same Tool-architecture.

My two ( or three ) cents...

Doei !
