I'm new to the forum but thought I'd see if I can contribute something here.
I've been trying to justify the same thing over the past few months. I
actually started out trying to prove RUP was insufficient and that an
alternative was more applicable.
I have no specific evidence that associates following the Rational Unified
Process to project success but there are studies that have been done that
should help. The Standish Group (www.standishgroup.com) produces a report
titled "Chaos: A Recipe for Success". Within that report they state that
there are 9 factors that contribute to Project Success - User Involvement,
Executive Support, Clear Business Objectives, Experienced Project Manager,
Small Milestones, Firm Basic Requirements, Competent Staff, Proper Planning,
and Ownership. They say that no project requires all the factors to be
successful, but the more factors the higher confidence level for success.
RUP addresses each of the nine areas even though it may take some adjustment
to make it work for your situation.
I've worked with several development methodologies and even created a simple
one for small teams. I started researching RUP about a year ago and my
opinion is that RUP is quite comprehensive. Every time I think I've found an
area that is not addressed by RUP, I'll do a search and find a page or two
on the very topic. Over time I've learned to navigate the information fairly
well and can find things without the search and I haven't been disappointed
yet. Yes, we've had to supplement some of the information, but what a great
starting point!
RUP also matches well to the Software Engineering Institute's Capability
Maturity Model. There is a relation between success and process maturity,
although some argue the validity of the CMM (now CMMI.) Having programmed in
the first level 3 (SEI assisted assessment) shop for seven years and then
stumbled into the commercial world, I could spend hours telling you stories
about the difference. It takes a little creative juice to transform it to a
systems development methodology (I'm still doing that) but again, I have a
big headstart and it's just expansion to a few of the workflows/activities.
Again, it's matching well to the CMMI.
I'd be interested in any other feedback you receive as well. Since we're
just starting to implement RUP I won't have conclusive evidence on any of
the projects I'm working with for a while. I have taken other organizations
through this exercise in the past, although we developed the knowledge base
ourselves. This has been a breeze compared to creating my own. My guess is
you will find the effort expended to learning RUP and implementing it, worth
every minute and all the pennies (actually dollars in this case) you spend!

Subject: (RUP) Benefice of RUP development
Hi, We start a brand new development to replace an old software, but the
stakeholders of the project are still not convince of the benefit to use
the RUP process. They develop the old software without any development
process, and they had lot of problem with schedules, defects etc. My
question: Is any one know where i can find information (statistic etc)
to prove that a RUP process reduce the cost and schedule of a
development and increase the fiabilty of the system ?? May be lot of you
had experience about your development and your evaluation the benefit of
the RUP process.
Any help will be very helpful
Thank you
