Greetings.
I would like to take this opportunity to address the licensing question.
Rational provides a web tool called AccountLink (found at
http://www.rational.com/accountlink) that allows you to manage your licenses
registered to specific hosts. AccountLink provides three types of
transactions:
1. GET A LICENSE KEY - use this transaction type to register a product
to your host. AccountLink will ask you some information about your
account, machine, and contact info then email you the license key if
the information provided is valid.
As far as the hostid goes, AccountLink allows you to register
Windows products to either the diskid of your boot drive or the
ethernet address of your NIC card. Your choice. As the gentleman
below points out, if you feel your diskid will change on your
machine, you can register products to the ethernet card instead.
2. RETURN A LICENSE KEY - In the event that your machine dies, use this
transaction to "return" the license registered to the dead host back
to your rational account. To do this, you will only need to know
your account number and hostname (not hostid) of the old machine.
Once the return is successful, you can then use the GET LICENSE KEY
function to register the product to your new machine.
So to "move" a license from one machine to another, perform a return,
then get the key for the new host. You should also keep in mind
that the return transaction does not physically remove the old
license key from the old machine, but AccountLink reminds you that
you are obligated to discontinue using the product on that host.
3. GET A COPY OF A LICENSE FILE - With this function, AccountLink will
email you a copy of the lastest license keys for any given host.
Let's suppose you just happen to wipe out your hard drive and need
to simply reinstall your Rational products on that machine. You can
use this function to ask AccountLink to email you a copy of the
last license file it sent you previously.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dave
