A GOOD book on design patterns is Design Patterns, Elements of Reusable
Object-Oriented Software by Gamma, Helm, Johnson and Vlissides (the Gang of
Four, commonly abbreviated GOF). There are 23 patterns well worth studying
here. Unfortunately, this book was written before Java and the UML, so the
examples are diagrammed in OMT and coded in C++ or Smalltalk. James Cooper
has written a book, Java Design Patterns, that presents the GOF patterns in
UML with Java examples. This book is ok, but I would still recommend
studying (just reading is not enough) the GOF book. Mark Grand has also
written several volumes, titled Patterns in Java, A catalog of Reusable
Design Patterns Illustrated with UML, Vol. {1, 2, 3}. He covers all but one
of the 23 GOF patterns in Vol. 1, plus several others. Again this book is
ok, but I would still recommend referring to the GOF book.
