To address the first question -- "why does Rose take so long to start up?"

This issue usually occurs on machines that have anti-virus software
installed and which scan each file as it is referenced. Rose is a highly
componentized application. The act of scanning each component as it is
loaded, **plus** each file that is referenced by the loaded file, is a major
cause of Rose start-up delays, even on fast machines with a lot of memory.
We know which files and file types are the major cause of Rose's slow start,
but for obvious corporate liability considerations we no longer advise
customers on how to tune their anti-virus software to achieve improved load
times.

Rose can load fairly quickly on systems for which the anti-virus software
has been tuned. For example, I just started up Rose Enterprise for the
first time today on my Dell CPx laptop. It took 27 seconds. I would expect
the time to be shorter on a machine with a faster CPU.

With regard to the second question, "why does Rose take up so much memory?".
Rose's memory footprint is a function of:

- How many Rose add-ins are running
- The size and number of the controlled units that are loaded in memory.

The footprint can be reduced by having active only the add-ins that are
needed at a given point in time.

The footprint also can be reduced by partitioning the Rose model into
controlled units and loading into memory only the controlled units that are
needed. Rose's Workspace feature was added a few releases ago specifically
to provide a convenient way for a user to define sets of essential
controlled units and reload the pertinent set at the start of a new work
session.

Another cause of high memory usage is use of certain Rose frameworks, in
particular the Java frameworks that ship with Rose. These things are big!
More experienced Rose Java users do not start with the frameworks. Rather,
they will simply reverse engineer from rt.jar or from j2ee.jar the framework
classes that they really need for their modeling.

Well, may be the question should be:
Why does Rose require so much memory?

Sounds like a paging problem. Rose requires a lot of memory. You should have
at least 128m.
