Ding,

These are two different concepts, where you have to decide which one to use.
The Oracle8i add-in is just for Oracle and uses stereotyped classes for the
database definition. It includes some OR capabilities of Oracle, but does
not have the possibility to define for example stored procedures.
Data Modeler on the other hand contains only relational capabilities,
maintains two models (logical - called object model and physical - called
data model) and can model views, stored procedures, stored procedure
packages, user defined data types, etc. If you do not use the OR features of
Oracle 8i, data modeler is definitely the way to go.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't got very far with my project, still can go
back and start over.

Just curious. Is it a technical sin that is going to hound me later to mix
the Data Modeler and the Oracle8 add-in, or is it just a way to keep the
data model generic (not tied up with Oracle)?

So far, I have been able to create a schema package and generate a correct
Oracle DB schema by using the Oracle8 add-in with Data Modeler. It seems
everything is OK.

I really need to understand this before I go any further with my project,
please enlighten me.

Oliver, Ding,

Please do not mix the Data Modeler and the Oracle8 add-in. You can define
with the Data Modeler the user-defined data types or how we call it in the
Data Modeler Domains. Create a Domain Package, assign the package to the
Database Type and create a Domain you want.

If you're trying to create a new model, click on "File"->"New". A "Create
New Model" window should show up. Then, select the "oracle8-datatypes" icon
inside that window.

If you have an existing model, you can import the C:\Program
Files\Rational\Rose\framework\frameworks\oracle8-datatypes\oracle8-datatypes
.mdl.

I did it in the first way myself. But I think either way should work.

Ding

Subject: (ROSE) Rose Data Modeler

Hi,

is it possible to specify an Oracle8-Type (i.e. VARCHAR2, Number) for a
column in a table in the Data Modeler or am I restricted to the default
types which are offered? What has to be done in the latter case when I need
these Oracle types?

Oliver Schoenhaar
