Another alternative is to use an Activity Diagram to 
illustrate the overall batch flow, then use notes links 
to underlying Sequence diagrams that illustrate the more 
detailed programmatic flow (with function calls and 
arguments passed and all that). In this way, you have 
the overall batch flow mapped out with underlying 
detail. You can use swimlanes to denote what the user 
does versus the system as well. Yet you can also show 
the programmatic detail. Remember you can also link 
activity diagrams together via notes as well if you 
think using a "leveled" set of activity diagrams makes 
sense too.

Anyway, just a thought.
