Sorry about getting in the Rose start up time, got into the thread late, and there was talk of Virus checkers and ini files. This is really only an issue with startup time and not model load time, so I started off down the wrong path.
Regarding having ClearCase\Version control addins checked or not. This is usually only a issue if you do not have these installed on your machine. What happens is every model file loaded triggers a call to the Version Control Software if you have these checked. If there is none on the machine, then we sit in limbo until the call times out. If you indeed do have Version Control installed, then this would not cause a huge delay. So where does that leave us? First one needs to understand the logic Rose uses here. Rose will load the entire model into memory upon loading. The idea is, slow model load time, but once loaded operations will happen faster. By the way, this was changed in Rational's other modeling tool XDE, where it is 'load upon demand'. How much time should it take to load a model of xxx size, and xxx .cat files? There is no hard fast number as this is completely model dependent. For example the more relations you have, the more time it will take for Rose to resolve those references on load. So is your model load time normal? Only way to confirm this, would be to load on another machine and compare. If you need to, you could email me the files and I would be glad to test here. The other things to look at. 1) Make sure you are working with Rose 2002. Development added some code to speed up load time by optimizing the resolving references logic. Note this is not going to make a night and day difference, more of a slight gain. 2) Assuming there is not something else here that is out of the ordinary, we are looking at system optimization. For example Rose itself grabs a lot of memory on startup. This could cause the model to start using swap space, which is of course much slower than RAM. We can investigate by using Windows performance monitor to see what is happening in this regard. And there are some things one can do to optimize the use of virtual memory. On a machine with 256, I'm guessing we're into swap territory. I am sending you a technical note in another email (it's quite long), which is pretty much a everything you wanted to know about performance tweaks and Rose. I spent some time a ways back putting this together on everything I could find related to this and Rose. It goes into details on the issue we have already discuss and talks about using performance monitor, etc. Hopefully something in all of this helps. I am required to use Version Control so I have just checked ClearCase option. version control is unchecked. Even I tried without that it takes less time than before but still it taking around 1.5 mins on P-3 256 ram without any other procee running on the computer. And with ClearCase it takes around 3 mis to laod it on the same machine.... And also I use Filemon(which is really nice, thanks for that) it has mostly used rose.exe thanks -Pramod "Kennedy, Patrick" To: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <pkennedy@rationa [EMAIL PROTECTED] l.com> cc: Subject: RE: (ROSE) Class Diagrams 07/09/2002 01:22 PM Just re-read your message and noticed you stated model load times, as oppossed to Rose start up time. Are these files under version control? If not then make sure you have version control and ClearCase turned off per suggestion below. This is the #1 culprit for slow model load time. Patrick Kennedy Rational Support -----Original Message----- From: Kennedy, Patrick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 09, 2002 10:18 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: (ROSE) Class Diagrams The model file, along with .cat file should not be an issue on startup. It would be a issue with model loading time after you started Rose (unless of course you are launching Rose by double clicking on the model file in the windows explorer), but otherwise would have nothing to do with Rose startup time. If the problem is slow model load time, as opposed to slow Rose startup, let us know, as this is a different issue. Two suggestion to help try to track down slow Rose load time. 1) Go into addin menu. Make sure you do not have both Version Control and ClearCase addin checked. Uncheck either or both if not being used. NOTE: that if you have ClearCase checked, but don't have ClearCase on the machine, then you will suffer a performance hit (i.e. slow startup). 2) Try downloading the following great free utility Filemon from http://www.sysinternals.com/ What this utility does, is show you all file calls in real time. Suggestion would be to start Filemon, then start Rose. Take a look at what file calls are being made. I know you have stated you turned off Virus checking, but once or twice before going this route, we have discovered that it was not disable as thought. For example if McAfee is active, Filemon will show you a couple thousand or so calls to McAfee. p.s. While you at sysinternals, another excellent utility along the lines of Filemon is regmon, which logs registry calls. This won't help diagnose the above problem, but a nice utility to have in your toolbox. If neither of the above helps, let us know. On most systems, (assuming you are not running a Pentium II, with 64megs of memory), Rose should start up in between 3-20 seconds. I have around 5 or 6 subunits which are pretty small and overall project size is less than 1 MB. I don't think system memory will be an issue for this.
