"Metafile" is used for the diagrams and can be EMF or WMF format.
The X"PaletteImages" and "ListImages" are BMPs for the browser and the iconbar. They contain multiple pictures with a fixed size and they have an Index.
There was an article on http://www.therationaledge.com/ about writing stereotypes (and of course in our German Book "Rational Rose und UML - Anleitung zum Praxiseinsatz", ISBN: 3898421724).

Does anybody know if is in Rose a possibility to define own icons for
own stereotypes. I've introduced own stereotypes for some components.
However I would like to mark out them using in components diagrams by my
icons.
