I did encounter a very similiar problem with sequence diagrams in my rose model. I believe there is a new patch that went out to fix the problem related to the seq diagram in Rose 2002.05????. Below find details that I received from Rational Support team..

3 defects were created for the following:
RATLC 47430: Sequence diagrams grow dynamically when scrolling.
RATLC 55021: Long lifelanes on the sequence diagram
RATLC 227853: Sequence diagram goes off the page
A patch went out to fix these and other defects.
Please close Rose and apply the following patch:
ftp://ftp.rational.com/public/V2002_r2/hotfix/Rose_7.7.0209.2360_omsr2_hotfix6.exe
