No, I wasn't getting either of those.  After your reply I went back 
and tried a few more things (I'd never worked out that that Route 
Parameters window did what it does either).  The problem seems to be 
that if you arm record from within Ardour and then start the 
transport from another application, it doesn't record, it just plays.  
If I use the play button in Ardour, that works.  That just hadn't 
occurred to me -- I was starting it from QJackCtl or Rosegarden 
previously.

OK, I just recorded 70 bars of 154bpm 4/4, and it's absolutely 
consistent -- the attack for each note starts in the waveform in 
Ardour about 4000 frames later than its nominal time, right up to the 
last bar.  That's a longer latency than I would have expected, but it 
may possibly be consistent with a synth with some internal latency 
being used in a JACK graph with 1024 frames per period.  It certainly 
isn't drifting, anyway.

Not quite sure where to go from here next.
