Come now, Gilles was definitely the more correct pedant there.  Had 
you said "one of its continental European names", you'd be quite 
right: but "its continental European name" implies only one such.

Back to the topic, I didn't completely understand what Vlada was 
asking for myself -- do I get the idea that the requirement is to 
split a part in cases where there are lower notes that do not match 
the start and/or end times of higher notes?  It sounds like something 
quite feasible for simple examples but potentially troublesome for 
more complex pieces, particularly where you might have a large number 
of overlapping notes happening at once.

Relatedly, Joerg Anders has recently implemented in NoteEdit an 
algorithm that splits imported MIDI into multiple voices by trying to 
find the set of shortest monophonic routes (where "short" is measured 
in distance both in pitch and time between neighbouring notes) 
through a part.  I couldn't get it to work at all well for 
unquantized or incompletely quantized input, though the principle 
sounds OK to me for well-quantized input.
