Funny, that.  I have /usr/local/lib symlinked to /usr/lib for some reason I 
don't quite remember.  That would explain it then.

I also ran into this using a LADSPA plugin on top, after I had already gotten 
the synth plugin into a playable state.  I applied the LADSPA plugin, hit 
play, listened, played my keyboard a bit, then paused for some unspecified 
period.  (All of which sounded fine.)  When I came back, it was all juddery 
again, and hitting play didn't fix it.  I had to strip off the LADSPA plugin, 
hit play, and then reapply the LADSPA plugin.  (I'm a little sketchy the 
morning after.  I think I literally did have to set the plugin to <none>, 
rather than merely bypass it, but I'm not positive.)

Ah, OK then.  I feel vaguely relieved.  :)

I might just do that.  Linuxdom is all about having an insane number of 
different ways to do exactly the same thing after all.  :)
