Do you mind if I try to redraw mentioned icon. I'll try to use the same idea. This question if especially applied to Silvan :)
What do you think is wrong with the icon? Is it a bad concept, lopsided, too
fuzzy, what? I don't remember anyone complaining about it before.
I really don't want to change the concept you gave us :) I just want to make it more precise!
I don't really quite like it, now that you mention it, but this isn't really a
good time to be changing icons either, with our being in feature freeze and
all. We should probably defer changing it until after 1.0. If it's more of
a massage than a rewrite, we might stick it in anyway. Hafta see it first.
If you want to work on icons, another project that could use doing, unless
Chris or Guillaume have some objection, is switching all the notation editor
icons from .xpm format to .png and getting rid of all the little fake
antialiasing that was done with gray pixels, in favor of using true
antialiasing with the alpha channel. It would require changing all the code
and probably the autoconf pre-Makefile stuff too, and there are a lot of them
to do. I'm not sure if there's a memory overhead problem using .png instead
of .xpm. I'm not sure why .xpm was chosen at all. It could simply be that
that's what apps were using when they got started on this project, and it's a
bit of a legacy. (Most things I've looked at lately use .png icons
extensively, if not exclusively.)
Of course, a potential down side is that with true and proper antialiasing on
all these icons, they would simply disappear entirely against a black
background. I'm not sure what can be done to improve that, short of
outlining them, which would probably just look terrible everywhere.
I can't quite remember why I have it in my head that this needs doing either.
I think maybe people complained about how bad these look against, say, dark
blue backgrounds or something. It's probably worth waiting for someone else
to chime in on some of these questions before you go to all that trouble.
Also, if you do get into that, you should be aware that bloody battles have
been fought at the pixel level on those things, so we're not inviting you to
change the shape/proportion/message of any of them. There's no creativity on
the table here, just pure scut work.
Speaking of which, there are two tr icons on the notation toolbar. It's
probably definitely too late to change that for 1.0, but it annoys me. The
bottom one is "trill with a wavy line" and the only way to tell them apart is
to remember that the wavy line one is on the bottom. That's lame. Also, I
have a RFE out for a "remove all marks" icon to be added. It will be the
very first new code I commit after 1.0 because the absence of that toolbar
action is really annoying me, but I wouldn't object at all if someone else
wants to draw the icon. While you're at it there are a couple of other
notation actions I want to toolbarify. I don't remember what they are at the
moment, but I'll let you know. The new stuff won't get in until after the
release, but that shouldn't stop you from alleviating your boredom now.
So go ahead and knock yourself out. If we don't like your submissions, we
won't use them. No harm either way in your entertaining yourself for awhile.
For a while? Redrawing notation editor icons is not a simple task! But I can help with that dirty job. All I want is to make sure I'm doing something useful :) So.. real developer wants to say something?! :) Just kidding! I can do that, but I would like to be sure I have all the informations needed: size, colors, format, what to redraw, what to enhance... blah, blah
