Are you using Glitz ?
Cairo runs at least 100 times faster if you use Glitz and the GLX X extension.
If you're not using Glitz, that explains why Cairo is slow for you.
The rendering speed you get depends of course on several factors like
your hardware, your graphics driver, your Xserver, etc.
I get about 20000 glyphs per second and 400-1200 frames per second
in the cairogears rendering tests.

Anyway it looks like SVG rendering won't be in Qt 4.0:
