FWIW, I did some more tests:

  * I switched KDE to US/english, restarted it and
    then Rosegarden - same error.
  * I did the same but used WindowMaker instead of
    KDE - same error.
  * I logged in as a different user (WindowMaker)
    and restarted everything - same error.

My setup:

  * SuSE-9.2 Linux distribution
  * ALSA-1.0.6
  * TiMidity++-2.13.2 (self compiled)
  * Rosegarden-4-1.0 release (self compiled)

I also have, but don't use currently:

  * jackd-0.99.49
  * QSynth-0.2.2
  * Fluidsynth-1.0.5
