Still can't, but one thing does occur to me.  Having what's what be obvious 
and visible at a glance has its own merit, and I wonder if it wouldn't be 
nice to set synth plugin instruments apart in some small way.  A slightly 
orangey yellow perhaps, that's still firmly yellow, but slightly different 
from the plain MIDI yellow; perhaps a tinge of red toward orange.  They're in 
the MIDI camp behavior-wise, but they're a lot more expensive than ordinary 
MIDI instruments, and I find I rather like the idea of making it obvious at a 
glance where the CPU cycles are going in the event something is too hoggish.

It's just a suggestion though.  Something to do while you're there if it's not 
horribly difficult, and if you agree it's a good idea.  Else, it's probably 
fine to leave well enough alone.
