I have fixed my font problems! Saturday morning I was all ready to
debug QT/KDE/fontconfig/freeType2/Xft so the first thing I did was 
rewrite /etc/fonts/fonts.conf to scan only the directory /usr/share/fonts.
Then I installed a courier font there (Type 1 i think). Bringing
Rosegarden then worked perfectly with the courier font! 
I still don't know what caused the original bug, but it works now.

I also wanted to asked if there is a guide to debugging rosegarden
under gdb(emacs). I succeeded in attaching to a rosegarden process but
I could find no way to debug the startup sequence.
