Since this was a thread about RG which is written in C++ I did not make it clear my comments referred to C++ but that is what I meant. I am not entering a debate about the relative pros and cons of static typing as in C++ and dynamic typing as in Ruby and Python. In a language like C++, choosing overly general types is bad for maintainability. I would certainly be interested to know of any specific counter-examples you might have.
