Ah.  libboost-dev is a metapackage for several others, so I'd assumed it 
probably had all the rest of the stuff in the apt list.  Guess not.

I've only had time to build and have a quick look at the code at the 
entry point in notepixmapfactory.  The makeFretboardPixmap function in 
there looks right to me, so I'm not quite sure what to suggest.  I 
would probably be using the QPainter drawing primitives to outline the 
areas I expect to be drawn on onto the canvas pixmap, so as to check 
that I am at least drawing something.
