Thanks for the patch. This seems like quite a good idea.

I don't much like the changed transport layout in aesthetic terms, but it does
raise some questions about our existing transport.

At the moment we have the following main button layout:

                     [Rewind ] [Play/Pause] [Forward]
[Rwd End] [Stop ] [Fwd End]
 ----------------------------------------------------
[Panic] [Metronome] [Solo ] [Record ] [Loop ]

Regardless of the original intention, which I can't quite remember, there is
in fact no difference between "pause" and "stop". There's absolutely no
advantage to using the Stop button in preference to hitting Play/Pause again
while the transport is rolling. (Is there?)

Also, the Record button maybe shouldn't be hidden away on the flappy bit. On
the other hand, you could say the same for most of the buttons on the flappy
bit, depending on your particular usage pattern. Maybe it's better to hide
several important buttons than to hide just one that you need but therefore
never think to look for (e.g. if Record and Solo were easier to find, you
might never use the flappy bit and so never find Metronome).

Thinking about a bit of a reshuffle, as well as possibly adding in the two
buttons Mikael suggests, how about this?

                     [Rewind ] [Play/Stop] [Forward]
[Rwd End] [Record ] [Fwd End]
 ---------------------------------------------------
 [Panic] [Metronome] [Solo ] [L1 ][ Loop ][L2 ]

where L1 and L2 are the Set Loop Start / End buttons and are narrower than the
solo and loop buttons, thus making it easy to line up the left edge of L1
neatly with the left edge of Record.

It does seem a bit silly to have an essentially redundant button on the main
bit of the transport, especially as it's one of the big ones. It's
interesting that (as far as I recall) nobody has ever complained about that.

The other funny thing about the transport is that "DIV /16" indicator on the
display area. It's not used for anything, it never changes, and again, I
don't recall anyone ever asking about that. Can anyone suggest anything
useful we might put there?
