I had a thought about the drum score quagmire, and it's probably
not an original thought to this list. But, here goes. Part
of the problem is that the standard notation isn't really all
that standard (it's a HUGE improvement over the prior state of
things tho). To work around this problem hardcopy publishers of
drum charts typically will include a key (key as in map key, not
musical pitch key) to the notation of the piece. If there were a
facility in RG4 to define such a key, would this help?

There's also the issue of staff line to MIDI mapping. It
seems that allowing a user to alter the mapping would be
pretty flexible. Of course, RG4 might want to follow the fine
Unix/Linux tradition of providing a sensible default.

As for the note heads, on the charts I'm familiar with, a
staff line will have a dedicated note head. Note heads aren't
constrained in a 1-to-1 mapping, however. Unfortunately, I think
I recall some accidentals on a chart or two -- I might be able
to dig for them -- where a line's previously defined note and
previously defined note head were changed for a note or more.
There was text on the chart right at the "offending" location
explaining the situation.

For me, simply being able to chose note heads on a line-by-line
basis on the staff would be all I'd really need. Oh yeah, it'd be
sweet if that could be part of a user's RG4 template, so I'd only
have to set it up once.

Given that hardcopy publishers haven't settled on a perfect
solution here, then it would seem that a perfect software
solution would be elusive too.

Does that help at all?
