System hangs when using the RTC timer are not at all uncommon -- especially with a real-time kernel. I think the snd-rtctimer kernel module is buggy. The particular version of Rosegarden shouldn't have any bearing on that, though. Rosegarden 1.0 should hang your system just as well as 1.3pre1.
