OK, that makes sense.  I was just trying to avoid another problem with LIRC 
being the weird bastard stepchild that doesn't behave like everything else, 
the way it was with scons.

It still is with your proposed solution.  If I turn off JACK I get

ALSA MIDI support             : TRUE
JACK audio support            : FALSE
LADSPA plugin support         : TRUE
DSSI synth plugin support     : TRUE
Custom OSC plugin GUI support : TRUE
LRDF plugin metadata support  : TRUE

which means LIRC continues to be the odd duck or the black sheep or the oveja 
negra or the bicho raro...

Not that I'm bitching about a free build system.  I should go read the stuff 
you've spent so long putting together, and see for myself just why LIRC 
doesn't fit the usual model.
