It depends on what kind of synthesizer you are interested. If you want to work with wavetable (simulated real instruments), this one has been already mentioned on this list (Warning - high price!) http://www.roland.com/products/en/SD-90/index.html Michael has a SC-33 and I have a SC-88. They are very good, but limited to the included ROM wavetable instruments, with poor customization parameters. If you need more flexibility and realistic sounds, then you need a sampler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampler_%28musical_instrument%29 If you are interested on pure electronic sounds, there are several technologies available. FM synths manufactured by Yamaha are well known classics, but nowadays almost all of these kind of synths are well emulated by software, and even harware models include the ability of run VST plugins.
