Here's a thought (and sorry I didn't comment sooner, but I was *working*.
Woot!)

I'm not sure about the particulars of the mechanism, but some draggy thing
would be a great boon. I think I'd show a bar (or at least a full beat) on
the outside of the window outlined by the markers, to give a cue that the
active composition is a subset of the total amount of data present. I
wouldn't give this cue for anything starting before 0 though, I don't think.

What I have in mind is a composition that runs from 0 to 150, and the user
wants to work with a window from 50 to 100. I'd show bars 49 and 101 in some
kind of translucent or gray or otherwise off-color representation, to
indicate that the data is there, but it's not audible at present.

Another thing along these lines... The new auto-expanding composition kicks
ass, except when it's a pain in the ass. Sometimes I just shortened the
composition to 93 bars on purpose, because that's how much room I have, and
the last bar really *should* be a brick wall. I'd like some way to lock and
unlock the end. It should be unlocked by default, but I'd like some way to
pin it in place so that I don't have to keep going back and putting it at 93
over and over, when I go just a hair off the end by accident.

No implementation or specific presentation thoughts at this time. I'm really,
really tired.
