If anyone is wondering where I wound up, I'm back driving a big truck. I will eventually have some time for Rosegarden, after I get settled into this new routine. I'm working much harder than I used to, but also earning more money than I used to. All in all, it could have been much, much worse. I got on a dedicated auto parts run that gets me home every day. It's better than pouring concrete, though if my old employer ever decided to put its trucks back on the road, I'd jump ship in an instant to go back to the halcyon days when I used to grumble about the best job I'm likely to have had in my lifetime.
GE Energy didn't call, and there simply isn't anywhere else to go around here as a technical writer. I could do tech support, but only if I were willing to work a shift that guaranteed being at work every evening, every weekend, every holiday, and never seeing my family. I could move, but moving is so problematic. Telecommuting is always a great plan, but show me the money. People have been trying to find ways for me to get some, but it's not enough, not stable enough, and a poor bet for keeping the ship sailing. This is what I have to work with where I live, and that means I pretty much need to keep driving to pay the bills. It's probably no coincidence that we have tons of truck drivers out of this town. There's nothing else to do without an advanced degree in chemistry, engineering, physics, and so on. Nothing. So at least I get to drive a shiny truck, and park the sumbitch every evening without living in it. It could be worse, although I can't say this is exactly the embodiment of jubilation. At least I don't look to go broke anytime soon. Maybe I will play around with something else when my kids are out of college in a few years. -- D. Michael McIntyre
