It seems like it's probably cleaner to put all of this stuff somewhere other 
than trunk, including whatever (orphaned stuff) is currently there.  I don't 
have any strong opinions on the details of this though.

You should feel encouraged to pursue this, and you should feel free to 
exercise your best judgment as to what should be moved where, and so forth.  
Getting someone to take an interest in this stuff would be very nice, and it's 
practically impossible to imagine how you could go wrong, regardless of 
exactly what plan you come up with.
