(Actually, reading this over I have a suspicion that even
adding/removing events was not in the original remit of
SegmentObserver -- that the observer was originally intended to handle
changes more at the segment scale and perhaps the add/remove events
updates were added afterwards.  I might be wrong about that though, my
recollection is hazy.)
