I think I have found the bug that made softSynth not play. I still need
to code a proper fix, but a quick and dirty fix made it play.
Briefly, I had done two things that conflicted:
* Don't send notes when we couldn't get a channel.
* For SoftSynth, not set the field that would have indicated this
because I was being careful not to change anything.
The unfortunate result was that Softsynth notes always failed that test.
I will code and push a proper fix for this ASAP.
