I did a little research yesterday.  In the Boehm GC that's just a call to
turn on incremental garbage collection.  In this mode, it doesn't "stop
the world" to collect.  We can also make big, infrequently changed objects
"stubborn", which makes it faster.

For the curious, this paper had some measurements of the Boehm GC, and it
doesn't seem at all bad:
