Thanks, Michael and Aere for the suggestions.  It looks like the MIDI
master/slave configuration might work best for me, since one of the
main things I want to do is start RG from my MIDI controller.

And, looking at the rosegarden preferences dialog, I see something that
I've ignored in the past:

MIDI -> MIDI Sync -> MIDI clock and system messages

where one of the options is: "Accept start, stop and continue"

My guess is that is what I want.  Then the next thing to figure out, I
suppose, is how to send MIDI start, stop and continue messages from my
controller keyboard.

I'll play around with it, when I get time.  If it works and I feel
inspired enough I may post a message here describing what I did, in
case anyone else wants to try it and finds it not straightforward.
(Feel free to ping me on it after a while if I've not posted anything.)
