Ted, I noticed you changed the debug printing to go to std::cerr.

Not that we have a uniform system now.  I did some work to make it less of
a pain to use and somewhat more uniform, but it's still a mix of different
designs and idioms.  There are still places of commenting debug-printing
in and out again, or reading thru #IFDEF brackets, or remembering QT's and
std's little differences.

Is there some way we can handle what you need thru the RG_DEBUG idiom?  Or
perhaps some way to have the best of both?

In fact, let's take the opportunity for a team conversation on how we
should manage debug-printing to make it easy for ourselves in the future.
