The old machines have specialized hardware installed and operate in two
clusters that can be merged as needed.  They are not connected to the
outside world, no Internet, and no WiFi, just shielded CAT6 cabling, so
security is not an issue.

Debian Squeeze used a version of Gnome whose gnome-session command had
some very desirable features when operating a cluster.  The later Gnome
dropped those features.  Linux Mint has some kludgey ways one can do
remote desktops but not nearly as convenient as the old Gnome.

Similarly, I note the new versions of Audacity seem to be less capable
than the version from around the Debian Squeeze period.  Features we use
alot no longer seem to be there.

The clusters do audio and video creation and rendering.  Not much else.
