The rwb rose comes up on the (default) GNOME version of Ubuntu. Not sure what the kubuntu folks have done to it.
I don't really do anything around here anymore, and definitely don't have the right to call anything sacred, but that icon was a photo Richard Bown took in Hyde Park eons ago, and it has been around since I was just some n00b who kind of got commit access to this project by accident. It makes me sad to see it replaced now.
I've been trying to convince a graphic designer friend to redo it for us (inspired, of course, by the original), but she'll probably never have time. That's the only credible "threat" at the moment.
