I actually found Ardour much easier to use than Rosegarden in several
ways.  Primarily, when I was first shopping for audio programs for
Linux, Ardour was the easiest to get running.  I think this is mostly
because the author of Ardour happens to also be the author of jack, and
because he knows both program interfaces inside and out, Ardour seemed
to always "just work" for me, whereas other programs took some time just
to get working with few issues.

For most of what you need to do in Ardour, you can treat it exactly like
an analog mixer with integrated tape machine transport remote.  Even
automation is fairly straightforward if you've ever played around with
Sonar or Cubase.  I think it's only when you start getting into the more
advanced features that you'll need to start digging into the docs.

Mixing is infinitely easier in Ardour, due to its dedication to audio
only and closer approximation to a mixer
