I've had a vague idea for years that plugin instances are shared internally when possible, and if you load, say, 16 copies of fluidsynth-dssi and 16 copies of Fluid Soundfont, you aren't really tying up all those resources on redundancy. I have absolutely nothing to back that vague idea up, and honestly have no idea how this works internally. I like to think my vague idea is true, but it could be wishful thinking. Either way, as far as I remember, there isn't, never has been, and there have never been plans for some way to tap into a pool of existing plugin instances to use them from a different track. In the broader scheme of things, I don't think DSSI ever really took off the way its authors hoped, and all of this is kind of one of those things that got as good as it got and then stopped growing a long time ago. I think basically everyone involved has moved on by now. I was never involved as such. -- D.
