There's a somewhat old page on the wiki explaining how to work on the translations.

The concepts are there, but the details may be off since we've upgraded to Qt5.

I think the Italian translation hasn't been updated in quite a while. If you'd like to take a shot at helping with that, let us know and we'll get you set up.
