We have lots of mappers but WAY too few developers. Why not invest what little time we have into steadily improving the editors, so people can simply fix broken and incomplete data.
Of course there are never enough developers, but in most of the US there are not enough mappers. So anything that can be done to start using OSM data will motivate people to correct the data that's there.
