Sure it does - it uses UDP/IP.
I even suspect that if ShareFS did use IP we would not suffer the problems of failures between machines that network at different speeds.
I would suspect that's more due to poor handling of packet loss etc as there is no builtin congestion control in UDP so the application layer has to do it.
