Thanks Tom, found it. ^end to find it non obvious.

I'm still having problems with file permissions, despite running and
mounting as root, I can't write to smb/cifs (on my linux router/fileserver
in the garage)shares as I seem not to be root. despite having username =
root in the config file. 

The rpcemu directory is in the /home/brian directory.

For some reason, the shares I mount under /media also appear under
/home/brian/Desktop when I use them under Emufs. Could this be where
permissions get changed resulting in being unable to write to the share.

I've tried getting round this by changing user under windows/VRPC to brian
but seem unable to have different users for the router/fileserver under
windows. This is the reason I want to use the share as root with
Ubuntu/RPCEMU.

Windows file sharing, a rat's nest I hate!!!
