Some more news on the lockup problem.

Everything stops.
I ran the Fedora system monitor and it said rpcemu was 'sleeping'.
I'm not sure if this reveals anything useful, but the process properties
said 'Waiting Channel Poll_schedule_timeout'.
Any help in sorting this out will be greatly appreciated. It is now
impinging on useful work.
