The setup always has been nptl ready (glibc 2.6; >= 2.6.16 kernels)

Looks like these new things from robustness patch require kernel >= 2.6.17 
(because the problem is not visible on such kernels with exactly the same 
userspace environment).

I've dropped robustness patch from our system db. PLD lived for a very (very) 
long time with external db and without the patch btw :)
