** [tickets:#3] `tests/conformance/scripts/run_tests.sh` takes too long to run**

The `tests/conformance/scripts/run_tests.sh` test takes a really long time, and
`make check` doesn't output any progress while it is running. It would be nice
if this could be broken up into multiple smaller test scripts (or switch to the
TAP driver) so that the user can see progress.
