COUNTER data handles wrap-around very well, but you get huge problems with early counter resets which can be caused by a re-boot, snmp reset, etc. These cause the spikes you see. The solution is to change the data source type from COUNTER to DERIVE and set a minimum value of 0 for the data source. It has been discussed here at length recently, and DERIVE does work well.

This problem seems to affect all my counters (simple eth plotting with snmp and hand-maid counter like syn packets with ntop as well) here's what a dump looks like : <!-- 2001-02-28 16:58:00 CET / 983375880 --> <row><v> 6.2437777778e+03 </v><v> 1.2493902778e+04 </v> <!-- 2001-02-28 16:59:00 CET / 983375940 --> <row><v> 8.9177872713e+05 </v><v> 1.7907601907e+06 </v> <!-- 2001-02-28 17:00:00 CET / 983376000 --> <row><v> 1.1760162884e+04 </v><v> 2.4809347659e+04 </v> Values from 16:58 and 17:00 are quite good ... but 8.9e+05 and 1.7e+06 don't match ... I got an MRTG running on the same eth and grabbing infos each minuts and he didn't report anything looking like this I assume this is caused by a counter set to 0 but i recursivly got peak for 70-80% of the interfaces monitored (not the same each time ... :/) at the same time anybody seen this before ? pleaaase :)) ____________________________________ 'Spyou' - www.spyou.org - [EMAIL PROTECTED] #gtr / ircnet.grolier.net - UIN : 6871374 We've done so much, for so long, with so little We're now qualified to do anything with nothing. -- Unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Help mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archive http://www.ee.ethz.ch/~slist/rrd-users WebAdmin http://www.ee.ethz.ch/~slist/lsg2.cgi ********************************************************************** The information contained in this e-mail is confidential and is intended only for the use of the addressee(s).
