Hi all I am new to this list and am contemplating using RRDTool for the first time. We currently have some software which collects performance data over the network to a central repository and plots performance counters over time via a web-based front end. The charts are produced using the CPAN module GD::Graph.
My impression is that RRDTool provides two main features, both excellent and quite distinct. The first is the database itself; the second is its ability to produce charts from the database. With regard to the first feature, there appears to be no contest and we plan to trial the use of RRDTool's database shortly. My question regards RRDTool's charting feature. A high priority for us in replacing GD::Graph (which produces PNG) is to generate charts in the SVG format. Although the stable release of RRDTool cannot do this, my impression from a search of the mailing lists is that support for SVG has been coded up and is in the latest CVS snapshot. (1) Is my understanding correct? If so, roughly when is it expected that SVG will be supported by the stable release of RRDTool? (2) Release 1.1.x gets mentioned from time to time in the mailing lists. Is it possible to try out a beta version of 1.1.x, or is the only choice between the stable release and the latest CVS snapshot? If SVG is not an option, we may use the CPAN module Chart::Graph (http://search.cpan.org/dist/Chart-Graph/) (together with the underlying library Grace (http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/) to produce the charts, but still use RRDTool for its database.
