Hello. I'm developing some scripts to use rrdtool to monitor usage of our software licenses. I have two GAUGE DS's, one that records the number of licenses in use and another that records the number of licenses installed on the license server. The in-use license counts are quite dynamic, as one might expect, so using rrdtool to record once-a-minute snapshots of them is quite natural. The installed license counts are rather the oppositive though - we add or remove licenses every month or so.
Currently I am recording once-a-minute snapshots of both the installed and the in-use counts so I can easily use rrdtool graphing to plot both values on the same chart. It works, but because the installed license count changes infrequently the data points in the installed license DS is extremely redundant, consuming a lot of disk space, etc. Does anybody have a better idea about how to collect and plot both slowly- and rapidly-changing values?
