I have the same problem, but nobody replied to my problem. https://lists.oetiker.ch/pipermail/rrd-users/2007-August/013055.html Since I have the problem, I use the MAX values for the day graphs and AVERAGE for everything larger than a day. This seems to be a nice workaround the problem.
