Alex,

In my current Perl code I open an RRDp connection.
To me it seams both remote control and RRDp do roughly the same.
Would you recommend using the remote control option over RRDp or won't that
matter ?
Performance is something I worry about as I have about 20.000 rrdfiles which
all need to be updated every 5 minutes so performance is an issue and my
endusers would like to see larger RRA's which would in effect triple the amount
of data.

Regards,
Martin

when you are going to do your benchmarking, please consider to keep
an rrdtool process running in 'remote control' mode: "rrdtool -"
Perhaps it makes a difference.

The link is currently broken (I'll send a note to Tobi about this),
but http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdtool.en.html#remote_control
at least brings you to the correct manual page; please scroll down.

Also know that some significant changes were made with respect to
caching. You really ought to keep an eye on development if memory
consumption and caching is important to you.
